What Happens after separation?

It is important for children after separation that life for them is safe, secure and that they have a reasonable relationship with both parents.  We understand the difficulty in parenting after separation.  The emotional stress you experience affects your communication with the other parent and can get in the way of your parenting responsibilities.

We can help you when you're in unable to agree on how to share your responsibilities to care for your children or you find you are not communicating at all.  We can assist you to work successfully towards establishing parenting strategies that work for the children and you.

The Law and Parenting Plans

In July 2008 the Family Law Act 1975 introduced the requirement that separated parents (or other family members) try family dispute resolution (where appropriate, there are exceptions) before going to court regarding children. For more information on this please visit the Family Court website on our links page.

While we are able to assist you to reach an agreement, it is not always possible to do so.  If you are unable to agree then we can provide you with the appropriate s60I Certificate, required by the court, to demonstrate that you have attempted family dispute resolution.

Research

When separated parents are in ongoing conflict, research has found that children and young people can suffer harmful consequences socially, educationally and psychologically.  Family dispute resolution can help prevent this from happening by helping you work together to reduce ongoing conflict for the sake of the children.
